Artist Statement
My painting journey started off in my 20s when I tried escaping from the monotonous life through art. Ever since I engaged in oil painting, observing humans from have been the main approach of my work. Portrait, human figures is the recurrent subject to express my deep affection to mankind. From my day to day life around my neighborhood and my
work places, I took pictures, did quick sketches, and in the end combining them together with my memories to recreate the scene I was in. Naturally, the photos served as a trace to recall my memories. Putting all flashback moments together as a result the faces and bodies that I painted somehow suffused with bright, intense, and vibrant
colors. Very often I heard people defines my work as dreamy-like, imaginary or even fantastic. However, from my prospective, I would say my paintings documented my ordinary days as it is.
After I’ve diagnosed with a mental health condition which causes extreme mood swings, and perhaps may have caused illusions, and blurry vision, (which for me is still part of the reality inevitably), my work took a shift into more psychological side. I then focus more on self-portraits, self-nude painting, life drawing, society and humanity studies. Always in a constant battle with myself, and yet the world I witness with my
eyes is bumpy and little peculiar, my color perception and sensation, and my spontaneous brush strokes developed into something like realistic imagination, an intermediate state of illusion and reality. Expressing myself in painting help me through all the emotions storms. Demonstrating my passion on the canvas with strong brush strokes and cheerful colors when the depressed persona takes control. In this way, my
hypomania tends to express my feelings in a more natural and moderate style with light grey tones. Indulging in the two extremes is my way of existence.
